Pomona Health Career Ladder

Biomedical Scholars are second and third-year students from the Pomona Unified School District

The Pomona Health Career Ladder Biomedical Scholars are second and third-year students from the Pomona Unified School District (PUSD) exploring careers in Health Professions.

Biomedical Scholars have the opportunity for in-depth exploration of a career in the Health professions throughout middle and high school, continuing into their college pre-health professions phase at CSU Pomona. Starting with their induction in a “white coat” ceremony, these students will received targeted teaching and advising to smooth their path into the Health profession of their choice. The program is built around the five pillars of achievement illustrated on the Mission and Objectives page.

Features of the Biomedical Scholars program include the following:

A mentorship “pod”

Middle school and high school Biomedical Scholars are matched in a mentorship “pod” with Cal Poly Pomona and Western University mentors on the same health career path.

Advising and direction

Biomedical Scholars received targeted advising and direction to resources for academic assistance and social mentorship.

academies

Biomedical Scholars continue to participate in monthly academies. They assume increasing responsibility in a leadership role, conducting independent research, designing and presenting topics to 6th graders and their families.

Community service

Biomedical Scholars perform targeted community service, through Cal Poly and Western University club activities.

WesternU clinical education program

Biomedical Scholars teach professional school students, including those studying to be doctors, nurses, physicians assistants and others, by acting as a Standardized Patient in the WesternU clinical education program.
